What is it called when the polar ice caps are melting because of the overwhelming amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? It's called global warming. Some scientists declare that it doesn’t exist but some are hardcore believers of global warming. Take for example, Al Gore. Al Gore, a runner-up in the 2004 presidential election, takes global warming awareness to the next level. He goes around the entire country persuading citizens of the United States to believe that global warming is not a hoax and if it goes unchecked can cause catastrophic troubles for future generations.

One of the most discussed topics of global warming is the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is just like what happens in a greenhouse. Heat enters the greenhouse, in our example the earth being the greenhouse, and doesn’t leave because of all the carbon dioxide preventing it from leaving. Heat rays from the sun can enter the earth because of holes in the o-zone layer. Holes in the o-zone layer are caused by aerosol cans and other aerosol products, which result in the harmful UV rays from the sun to penetrate the o-zone layer more easily. Co2 levels in the earth’s atmosphere are the highest on record, because of the constant use of gas burning automobiles and coal burning power plants. With the rising temperatures the polar ice caps are beginning to melt a steady pace. If this continues the polar ice caps will be gone somewhere in the next 50 years. Not only will it cause rising sea levels, but it will cause habitat destruction. One can see why global warming is such a hot topic to so many people.

Al Gore is such a dedicated believer that he even won the Noble Peace Price for his work for global warming awareness. If there were more people who will just open up their mind and just listen to one of Al Gore’s sermons, global warming would not be a problem of the future.
